Invest-NL invests in Protix. It is Invest-NL's first transaction with a direct contribution to the protein transition in the AgriFood sector and very much in line with the National Protein Strategy. Protix's current shareholders are also involved in the transaction. With this funding round, Protix can further optimize her production capacity and accelerate the international expansion.

As part of an investment round of € 15.5 million, Invest-NL invests € 7.5 million. Protix's current shareholders also invest in addition to Invest-NL; Aqua-Spark, Rabo Corporate Investments, and the BOM - Brabant Development Company. Protix is very pleased with this new investment round. This is another step in expanding our leadership in the insect industry.

The financing of Protix fits very well in the investment strategy of Invest-NL, supporting innovative, fast-growing companies and a focus on the CO2- neutral transition. Wouter Bos (CEO Invest-NL) on the Protix transaction: "I am pleased that we can support Protix in strengthening its international top position in the fast-growing market for insect-based ingredients. I also think it is favorable that we establish this transaction together with the European Investment Fund (EIF). With the 'InnovFin SME guarantee' that we recently agreed with the EIF, innovative, fast-growing companies can scale up even faster with the help of European investment funds".

"Protix was born from innovation with a focus on positive environmental impact. We are the founder of a whole new category of proteins and other nutrients and the brilliant colleagues at Protix work on this day and night." says Kees Aarts, founder and CEO of Protix. "This is another great step in the expansion of our leadership and many more will follow in the coming period".

Closing the food cycle with insects

Protix breeds larvae from the Black Soldier Fly. Organic waste from the food industry serves as feed for the insects. In turn, the insects are processed into sustainable ingredients like proteins and lipids. These nutrients are used by Protix's customers as nutritious ingredients in various animal feed applications. Insect ingredients are more sustainable ingredients than soy or fishmeal and help prevent overfishing and deforestation for soy cultivation.
