Scientific research shows better broiler performance on black soldier fly-based diets

Insects are natural source of nutrition for poultry. The 2024 scientific study by Wageningen University & Research, published in Poultry Science, evaluated the effects of black soldier fly larvae ingredients on slow-growing broilers. The results revealed that comparable or better performance was achieved with the inclusion of black soldier fly larvae products in broiler diets compared to control.

Black soldier fly protein meal and oil showed better performance when combined, implicating the importance of providing both ProteinX and LipidX in commercial diets for best results.

Based on the feed conversion ratio, the highest inclusion levels of insect products achieved the best performance. This study indicates that live larvae might be the most favourable for animals, while black soldier fly meal and oil are viable and commercially available ingredients that generate visible performance benefits in broiler diets.
