A new study heralds good news for dogs, especially those suffering from allergies or other skin issues.
The results reveal that incorporating ProteinX into the canine diet improves the skin barrier function, which is essential for maintaining hydration and overall skin health. A healthy skin barrier in dogs prevents dehydration, preserves moisture in the stratum corneum skin layer, and maintains its structural integrity, which helps protect against skin infections.
ProteinX in the diet can also result in a stronger antioxidant defence system. This is particularly crucial for animals suffering from skin problem, and is also vital for maintaining overall health, organism functions, and the prevention of premature ageing of the body’s cells.
This recent research, conducted by the Federal University of Paraiba in Brazil, compared skin water loss and oxidative stress biomarkers after 50 days on a ProteinX-based diet (29.5% inclusion) against a traditional diet with a similar nutrient and ingredient composition but formulated with poultry by-product meal (PBP).
The results show that the dogs fed with ProteinX had an improved skin barrier which supports their resistance to viruses, bacteria and environmental toxins. Key biomarkers of oxidative stress were also reduced, indicating a healthier immune system and protection against a number of diseases.
The new study brings promising opportunities for manufacturers to market positive health claims, with a nutritious and sustainable diet that is naturally palatable.
